What will be done
The office assistant will first check your vision using an eye chart, and measure your height and weight. This is done while you are still dressed.
The doctor will then meet you and ask you some questions about your health and explain the examination procedure to you.
You will then be left alone in the examining room to undress.
When the doctor sees you again a few minutes later, he/she will examine the following:
- Throat, ears and eyes
- Neck
- Lungs
- Blood pressure
- Heart
- Abdomen (liver, spleen, kidneys)
- Reflexes
Breast examination is not done unless there is a history of breast cancer or a suspicion of breast cancer based on the provided history.
Vaginal or rectal examination is never done.
You will spend about 30-40 minutes in our office. You should allow another 60 minutes to complete the X-ray and lab tests, in separate offices in the same building.
Undressing
You will need to undress for the examination, as required by the standards set by the immigration authorities.
Men are asked to undress to their shorts and then sit on the examining table. Men are usually not offered a gown or cover sheet but these are available if desired.
Women are asked to partially undress and are given a gown to wear, You will remain covered throughout the examination.
Chaperones
Dr. Ciszak (who is a male physician) will have a female chaperone present while examining all female applicants. If you wish, you may additionally have a female relative with you in the room.
